How to Prepare Your Baby for Their First Swim Lesson

Singing “Ring Around the Rosie” is a favorite part of our baby and toddler swim classes.

Your baby’s first swim lesson is an exciting milestone — and a big step toward a lifelong love of the water. At Chicago Blue Dolphins, we make sure every child’s first experience is joyful, safe, and stress-free. With just a little preparation, you and your little one can dive right in feeling confident and ready.

What to Bring to Baby Swim Lessons

Packing the right items helps you focus on fun instead of scrambling for forgotten gear. For each class, we recommend:

  • Double Diaper — a reusable swim diaper over a disposable swim diaper (required for all children under 4)
  • Baby swimsuit (comfortable and easy to move in — reusable swim diaper can double as a suit)
  • Towel (hooded towels are great for keeping your baby warm)
  • Change of clothes for after class
  • Parent’s swimsuit — because you’ll be in the water too!

Timing Is Everything — Plan Around Naps & Meals

Babies do best when they’re well-rested and not overly hungry. Try to schedule your swim class:

  • At least 30–45 minutes after a feeding to prevent discomfort in the water
  • After a nap, so your baby is alert and happy
  • Avoiding cranky times of the day (every baby has them!)

A little timing strategy can mean the difference between a happy splasher and a tired fuss ball.

Introduce Water Play at Home First

Helping your baby get used to water before class can make the first lesson even smoother. At bath time, you can:

  • Let water trickle over their shoulders and head
  • Gently splash together and make it fun
  • Use a cup to pour water near (but not directly over) their face at first

This creates familiarity with water sensations — and builds confidence before they even step into the pool.

Set Realistic Expectations for the First Lesson

Every baby reacts differently during their first swim class. Some will laugh and splash right away, some may be more cautious, and some might cry. All are completely normal: your little one is a new place, with a new coach, new kids, and a new routine.  As the newness wears off, they will get down to having fun and giggles.

In our infant-toddler swim classes in Chicago, our instructors take it at your baby’s pace. We focus on comfort, trust, and positive experiences — not rushing into underwater skills.

Dress for Comfort — for You and Baby

  • You: Wear a comfortable swimsuit that allows you to move and hold your baby easily.
  • Baby: A well-fitting swim diaper, a disposable swim diaper, and swimsuit prevent distractions and keep them comfortable.
  • Extras: If your baby gets cold easily, consider a baby wetsuit or swim shirt for extra warmth.

Enjoy the Moment

The first lesson isn’t just about skills — it’s about bonding, laughter, and building a positive association with water. Smile, cheer them on, and let them know you’re proud.
